last chapter- huck finn
When Tom was shot in the leg, Jim had the chance to run away and become a free man. Jim chose to stay back with Tom as opposed to becoming a free man. This shows that Jim really cared for Tom and didn't want Tom to suffer. Jim got respect from the white men when they heard that a black man was being nice and called a doctor to save Tom from dying from the gunshot wound. The only thing that made things not extremely happy was the change in plan that Tom created. Things would have been a lot easier if they would have stuck with their original plan. Everyone had a happy ending except for Huck. He was struggling with the fact of being civilized. Overall a majority of the characters had a happy ending. I think the point of this book is trying to tell us that blacks should be treated the same as everyone else. We see this when the white people are impressed by Jim's actions towards helping Tom with his leg. I believe that the most important person that needed a happy ending, received a happy ending, Jim.
Chapter 29-31
Huck knows where Jim is during this chapter. He also knows that the king was willing to tell where Jim was for forty dollars. Huck is trying to figure out how to be a "good" person. Throughout the book, Huck struggles with the kind of life Miss Watson models for him which is about saying prayers and trying to be good. Huck believes that he is too sinful. Huck decides to write a letter to Miss Watson telling her where Jim is. He then realizes that would only get Jim into trouble and make him seem like a bad person. Huck realizes that Jim has been his greatest friend and wants to save Jim on his own without Miss Watson. Huck shows his maturity in these chapters because he is willing to make a plan to rescue Jim on his own without help.
Chapter 26-28
Huck ruins the Duke and the King's plan by telling Mary Jane that they are con artists. This could very well ruin Huck's life and put him into a lot of danger. The Duke and the King want to steal 6,000 dollars. They come up with a very elaborate idea and plan to do so. Huck steals the money from the Duke and the King and puts it inside of the coffin. I think that Huck does this to show the readers that he wants to be more mature. Huck tries to do what is right and morally correct. He thinks that it would be bad for the Duke and the King to "win" by getting away with stealing all of this money. Huck decides to do the right think and tell Mary Jane that they are con-artists.
Chapter 21-25
Jim has a daughter named Elizabeth who is four years old. In chapter 23 Jim tells the readers a story about Elizabeth. He says that one day he was trying to talk to his daughter but she didn't say anything back to Jim, she simply just smiled. Jim gets very frustrated and tries to talk to her again and repeating it even louder. Jim gets even more frustrated and slams the door shut. A little while later Jim realizes that she is deaf because of the scarlet fever. I thought it was very interesting how he talked about his daughter in this way. I feel as if he misses his daughter very much. This is the first time in the book that Jim goes into depth and tells a story about one of his family members. I think that this shows that Jim not only misses his daughter but feels badly about the way he treated her by yelling even louder when she couldn't hear him. Jim may also be homesick. We know this because this is one of the first times he tells a story about Elizabeth.
Chapter 19- 21
The Duke and the King make up who they are so that they can trick Huck and Jim. Huck knows all along that they are con artists but follow along with their stories. They find out at the camp-meeting that they truly are con artists. I think that it is wise for Huck to go along with the Duke and the King because it protects them from danger. Huck doesn't want to pick a fight by telling them that he doesn't believe that they are not royalty. However, the men are somewhat dangerous and it would be hard for them to trust them when you know that they are never telling the truth. But Huck goes along with it just because he doesn't want to harm Jim or himself, and I believe that is good. If he didn't go along with it the Duke and the King might have picked a fight or become very upset and Huck and Jim.
Chapters 17 and 18
Buck and Huck are similar in many different ways throughout chapter seventeen and eighteen. Buck is a very adventurous person, as well as Huck. They are both adventuresome and good hunters in the woods. Huck is the same age as Buck, fourteen (page 82). Buck had a very nice family who took care of him all of the time. When Huck was with the Watson's they were nice and he lived in a good environment. It was much better than what his dad gave to him. Buck and Huck both like to smoke. They both enjoy telling stories about their lives and adventures.
Chapter 16- Huck Finn
In the first couple of sentences of the book they are in a boat and they see a raft right behind them. The raft that they see is 'monstrous' and is holding most likely 30 men. The rafts men was using long sweeps or long oars that were used to steer or propelling the craft. The raft that was behind them in the beginning of the chapter was very large, had wigwams and had an open campfire in the middle. The raftsmen were being very obnoxious by yelling at each other. Another observation that I made about raftsmen would be that when Huck lied about his family being on board and them having smallpox. The people on the raft in front of them have fights and then later in the night just totally get over it. This shows how they truly don't care about it and how easily they get over it.
Huck Finn Ch. 12-15
Jim and Huck both found a sailboat on the river. I don't think that ever would have thought that there would have been anyone on the boat. But all of the sudden they hear noices coming from inside the boat. Huck wants to save the men on the boat by keeping the robbers away from getting away with everything. Huck ran back and told Jim and even though Jim didn't want to go, they both went to save the men. I think Huck does this to show that he is a nice person and likes to help people. Huck also doesn't want the people on the boat to die. He would rather than die from something else other than something that you couldn't control. This chapter we see how Huck likes to help people and how nice of a guy he is. I think Huck does this not only to help people because he receives joy by doing so, but to show us as readers that he is not a bad guy.
Huck Finn Chapters 7-11
Jim thought that it was bad luck that Huck had dealt with a snake skin who had its shed. Huck plays a trick on Jim by placing a rattle snake by his bed. Jim gets bit by the snakes mate. Jim's ankle is now very swollen because of the bite. Huck had many opportunities to trick Jim, but didn't take the risk. I think that before Huck didn't want to trick Jim because he wanted a friend. I don't think that Huck planed out this trick as well as he wanted to, or I don't think he thought that it would be that harmful. Huck felt badly about the prank after he did it but Jim proved to Huck that touching the snake skin really did cause bad luck.

Eustace didn't have an apprentice that he really trusted that was able to manage Turtle Island well. He didn't think that any of the apprentices could do all that Eustace could, which was everything. (page 198). The apprentices disliked Eustace so much because they were never enough for him. Eustace Conway is very controlling because he wants his apprentices to be smart about nature and expects them to everything. Eustace treats his apprentices with little respect and expects them to do whatever he says. He assumes that they know how to do things just because he knows how. For example, on page 210 Eustace tells one of his apprentices to go and fill this bucket with water, but the apprentice has never learned how to fill a bucket before. The apprentice struggles and Eustace laughs and says, "that is the simplest task in the world". I would not want to work for Eustace because he is so controlling and would expect me to know how to do everything. I would not want to for for someone who thinks that they are better than me or knows more than me, even if they do know more than me.
Chapter 7
Eustace rides his horse across the country with his brother and his brothers friend. Eustace wants to ride across the country to prove to other people, or to brake a record for riding across the country the best or the quickest. His brother and his friend just wanted to enjoy the trip and observe the country for what it is. One significant thing that happens to Eustace on the trip is that he has an experience with a mule named Peter Rabbit. Peter Rabbit is a very brutal mule and fought Eustace. Eustace gets so upset that he starts to bite the mule and beat it up. This shows that Eustace always wants to have authority over everything. Eustace never gave up and kept fighting.
Chapter 6 - LAM
Turtle Island
Eustace starts Turtle Island because he wants to get away from the society and live on his own. He wants to use nature for him, rather than all the unneeded necessities he thinks people lean on. Eustace starts Turtle Island with the help of his father. Eustace has an all boys camp at Turtle Island. I think that he starts this camp so that he can teach other children about how he lives. Becuase Eustace has Turtle Island it allows him to show other people the way that he wants others to live. Turtle Island is like Eustace's utopia, perfect, beautiful and exactly what he wants. Overall starting Turtle Island really starts Eustace future and makes him really want people to be interesting in living outside the box and start living in the circle.

Chapter 29- 34
Linda escapes from her hideout and takes a boat to the north. Linda is somewhat excited about this in the beginning because she thinks that she will be treated differently in the North. She is later upset because she find out that the North is still very bad about slavery, if not worse because they believe that they don't have slavery. Linda is still excited because she knows that it will be better than where she used to live. Linda has been a slave her entire life so it will be more than great for Linda to experience a live not as a slave.
Chapters 25-28
William leaves Mr. Sands because he was tired of being a slave. Mr. Sands told William that after being a slave for five years, he would be freed. I believe that Williams actions were completely justified because he didn't want to be a slave anymore, however I can see where people might think it would be rude because Mr. Sands did say he would free him in five years.
Chapter 24
Mr. Sands comes to get the children because Linda wants to free the children. Mr. Sands told Linda that he would make sure that her children would be freed. I believe that Linda trusts Mr. Sands because he is the father of Linda's children. I think that she should trust him because he is her children's father. Even though he is a white man, and many white men have hurt Linda in the past, I think she should trust him.
Chapters 14-17
interesting passage
Love
Chapters 1-4
The first sentence in the book says, "I was born a slave, but I never knew it till six years of happy childhood has passed away. I think this quote is very powerful because it is unusual for someone to not know that they are a slave. She never knew she was a slave until she heard people telling her she was. I think that the story that Jacobs tells is so powerful because it is something that we have never heard of before. She presents a broad view by telling us her story but tells us about the others in her family and her new master. I thought it was very interesting that she believed that she was never a "piece of merchandise." She always believed in her family and knew that they would keep her safe. That is different from the "normal" slavery we hear about because they know that the slaves are available for money. I enjoyed reading about this because it was so different and the first chapter was looking at a side of slavery I had never seen before.

Chapter 6 and 7 Response
In this chapter, chapter six, Nick tells us the truth about how Gatsby makes his money. Gatsby is not really being truthful because he lies and cheats to become rich and powerful. When asked to speculate why Gatsby makes up lies about him being wealthy, I think that he only wants daisy. Gatsby is willing to do anything to “get” her to love him. On page 110, Nick explains why Gatsby is the way that he is. Nick says, “He talked a lot about the past, and I gathered that he wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy.” I think that this quote shows how in love Gatsby is with Daisy. Gatsby is so in love and stuck in the past he can’t move on without having Daisy in his life. Gatsby knows that Daisy enjoys rich people, so Gatsby lies about how her makes his money. I think the reason Nick doesn’t tell us about Gatsby’s lies earlier in the book is because we wouldn’t think Gatsby was the nice person we all thought he was.
